Oral History Activity in-class

For those of you in the 7-9:30pm class...this particular post is an in-class activity. We'll do this one together in-class...the Turkel post, below, is the one you'll have to respond to before class.

We're going to do a little research today on oral histories.

There are a number of sites that host various kinds of oral histories. For example, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum has some on their site at: http://www.ushmm.org/museum/exhibit/online/phistories/
I want you to do your own online research and find an interesting site that inlcudes other kinds of oral histories. Post the URL as a comment along with a description of the site.

This link talks about the people of the Galápagos Islands. At first it has a very informative section about the islands telling you about the people, land, and animals. This introduction helps to know a few facts about the islands. After this is has three oral histories with people telling about their lives on these islands. The stories told are interesting because the way of life on these islands are different from the way of life here.

The website listed has about 200 oral histories from Hurricane Katrina survivors. The one I listened to was a woman describing her experience; she refused to evacuate because she thought the storm wasn't really going to happen, and the day before the storm hit, her family practically abducted her, saving her life. Her home was destroyed, but her family was safe, and that is all she cared about.

This is an interview of Elie Wiesel, a survivor of the Holocaust in Auschwitz. He's a Nobel Peace Prize winner and talks about how important it is to educate children about the mistakes that have been made in the past so they will not repeat them in the future. He also talks about how presently the world is not learning from the mistakes of the past.

This is site contains an oral history about Gerard Hansen and his daughter Ashley Hansen. They own a sno-ball stand in New Orleans. A sno-ball is a hybrid of a snow cone and a slushy puppy, truly fascinating stuff. I better win that grape popsicle or I will be so pissed.

This Oral History is about a man involved in what they call "Black Friday The Fire of 1939 Victoria". It is a very sad account seeing as how he was responsible to help stop the fire, but in doing so he got his brother killed along with many others. They were sent up the hill to try and stop the spreading of the fire. They weren't able to though. In the fire the man lost his brother. He feels extremely guilty for making some men go back up to help when he went down to help the woman and children.
