Couple of news stories to takehttp://www2.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gif a look at...

This is not meant to take the place of the student postings...just some stuff we might mention in class...

First this one...another teen shooting...will they link it to video games? The initial story described the mall as his "shooting gallery."

Second, this one...is our use of language changing? Do you think this is a good or bad thing? What do people in the article say about it?

This is definitely a bad thing. The IM lingo is not supposed to be used in anything besides an IM or a text message. Sure people have added lingo like brb or lol into everyday colloquial face to face conversations, but putting them into formal essays is not good. Teachers need to enforce the fact that this lingo does not belong in a formal essay. I would never dream of using IM lingo in a formal essay but I have been taught the essentials of a formal essays. More teachers need to teach their students how to correctly write a formal essay and this problem can be reversed.
