Misleading headlines?

Check this CNN story out. Don't you think the headline is a little misleading? It's the the same tag that users click on from the CNN frontpage. It totally makes this sound like the killing was the direct result of a particular game....no?

The title is definitely misleading, especially in light of our discussions. It does make the article appear to be the direct result of a video game, but as you read the article, you can easily discover that it was actually a domestic dispute in which the "stolen" item just happened to be a video game and system. I think that the title was given because it would attract more viewers, which is essentially the goal of the website. It also dramatizes the event. I don't see how the shooting actually has any influences linking back to a video game. The object of controversy could have been any material item, it was just a coincidence that it was a game system, and the press took this fact and monopolized it for publicity purposes.

I agree with catsagain...the title probably was used to attract attention and sway the audience. While I agree the event could have been caused by anything, I think it's interesting that someone should steal a video game console. I would want to know if he kept it to play...could he be terribly addicted??? or is he after money from selling it? or some other larger dispute he was trying to settle? Something tells me if he was after money, he would have stolen the television or something too...but maybe it was too big? Back to the point, that if he stole it to use it, maybe video games can be another addiction problem. I'm surprised this sort of allegation never emerged.

I agree that the title is misleading. I'm a journalism major though, so I try no to be too critical. I know that authors don't title their own stories. Most of the time they just send a few suggestions for a title. In the end thought, the editor chooses something that fits in the available space.

The sad thing is though, misleading headlines break down a news programs ethos. I mean, when I read this article, I really did expect to read about a specific video game that encouraged someone to kill. The article disappointed me and I felt like CNN let me down too...I'd expect more from their editorial staff.

i agree that the headline is misleading at first i thought it was because they were playing a video game and the turnout of it caused it to turn into a violent shooting because someone lost...that would be an interesting story in itself but its better to hear that someone didn't over react in that sense because i feel like that would be a little over board. But still i think it is sad that a stolen video console turned into a man hunt that is absolutely rediculous honestly there are other things that are more important to worry about.

Well if I were to just read the title i would think that someone went out and killed people because he played a video game. Like the video game influenced him to do so, but when you actually get into the article you realize that the whole thing was over just a console. I believe they put this title on this article becuase they wanted to attract more people into reading this news. I mean he stole the console and someone went to confront him about it and he lost it. That has nothing to do with video games at all besides the fact that it was what was stolen. The title would lead me to believe that the author has a bias against video games and especially violence in video games. There are a lot more "titles" you could give this article that would fit the information better. You can't convince me that there isn't another title that would attract just as many readers. So yes in my opinion i would agree that the title is very misleading.

The suspect mentioned that the conflict was about a Playstation and not a specific video game. I actually replied with their feedback option which is located at the top of the story. To the casual reader it appears as if a video game was the impetus behind the violence that ensued. It isn't completly accurate and is misleading in my opinion. Then again it is factually true, but perhaps people will read it and automatically associate the game as the reason for the violence.

The headline is extremely misleading. If someone were to just skim the headlines, they would think "another killing because of those violent video games" but the actual games had nothing to do with it. It was a robbery gone wrong that happened to be over something as trivial as a video game consonle.

I agree this headline is extremely misleading. The murder wasn't even over a specific game console. I feel he murdered them out of self defense he probably was alarmed that someone was approaching him right after he had just robbed them. For anoyone just reading the article they would be souly searching for why he murdered them over the playstation console or they would just say "oh god" another tragedy caused by those darn videogames!
