Love, sex, robots.

Alright I watched a clip on the Colbert report that I thought could tie into the class. David Levy talks about the future and how sex in the future will be more geared towards robots. It brings up interesting points about how robots and other things like that will affect the future. Seriously though there are people who are in their 40's and 50's who can't find someone to love anywhere or anyway. This would provide a form of a relationship to help them. If robots look like humans, act like humans, except are programmed to want what we want even when we want it, then whats the problem? People today are on their computers more often, watching television in record amounts, and not going out and living their lives more than ever. This seems like a viable alternative to someone who maybe doesn't want to date or try to build a relationship. Think of maybe an old woman who has a husband who dies and is very lonely. What if she had a robot that looked and sounded like him? That would comfort her much so more than watching videos. After watching the video this is my question, do you think that people will be actually falling in love with robots and this will be help for those who can't seem to find a relationship, or....will this just be the space age blow up doll?

I think Colbert was kidding, but yeah I hope people don't start dating robots. If anything I would want an entourage of robots, but it would be strictly platonic. I think it would be interesting trying to figure out who was a robot and who wasn't. Would they be programmed to tell you they were a robot if you asked them like a UC? "ARE YOU ROBOT? YOU know have to tell me..". I know I would be furious if I was at the altar at my wedding and my groom malfunctioned and I didn't know he was a robot. The whole thing about people having sex with robots could be possible, but I really hope that wouldn't develop because it would be:
1. Creepy as hell
2. desensitize us even further from the 'real world'
3. make sex less important with 'real' people(Because who wants to wine and dine a girl, when you have your hot robot girlfriend???)please.
4. Weird robot sex related injuries
5.ITS REALLY CCREEEEPPPPY

Love+Sex with Robots = CRAZY! This is a completely ridiculous notion and I am actually surprised (though I don't know why) to hear about this in my lifetime. Building a relationship with a machine; it just gives people who have trouble interacting with others one more reason to continue not interacting with others which in today's day and age is not going to help them at all.

As for the thing in the entry about an old lady with a robot in the likeness of her dead husband to help with the grief cycle rather than watching old video recordings is just frightening. And I mean that literally. If I lost someone, then they are dead. They are not coming back, and to see them walking around, possibly talking and whatnot would freak the hell out of me. People who are dead are dead, and should stay that way. And rebuilding them as a robot is wrong on so many levels. And so is sex with a mechanical human, for that matter.

I think people could fall in love with robots. Since you see people in love with their material things every where you go. But if people really did have these sexbots then a whole other set of issues arises. Like do the robots have rights, or is it moral to really make something into your slave. I do agree that it is very creepy if you did have a sexbot. And even if you didn't just use it for sex but just to have someone/something to love, it would still be creepy.

ok, so i have sympathy for those who have difficulty finding a person to be in a relationship, but resorting to something souless just doesnt seem right. DID ANYONE SEE THE STEPFORD WIVES?! i dont know if someone could ever really love a robot. i understand exploring sexuality, and im all for it, but having a partner that doesnt feel takes 90% of what love-making is all about...making love. i dont think that we will ever get to that level in humanity where people fall in love with robots, mostly because i think its impossible to fall in love with one. not only that, with the "widow" theory, all that reinforces is not being able to let things go. a necessary trait someone must master in life is letting something bad that happened go and not worried about it. i dont see any positives about being any sort of intimate with a robot.

I find this really... weird. I don't people falling in love with robots (or doing anything else I don't want to think about) because it seems absolutely ridiculous. But as much as I believe this to be crazy, I actually could see this actually happening. I really hope this wouldn't happen in some ways, but then again I do hope someday we do have robots. I don't want this to happen because I could see it one day becoming somewhat of a norm to have robots walking around just like human beings, which would be creepy. But then again, it would be cool to have a robot, but only if it was the type that was on the jetsons because that would just be plain sweet!

This has to be the craziest blog yet. First off integrating a robot to take over in place of a human is probably the biggest mistake people could make. This would only lead to robots taking over just about everything which you get my point. I found it funny how Colbert really had a hard time taking this guy seriously. The guy did seem informed, but for all of the wrong reasons. This is not about a good relationship this is just simply dumb. Why would anyone want to marry a robot instead of a human. If you really are in the much trouble you need to have some serious counseling. The one thing that stood out to me was that this interview was not on CNN or FoxNews but rather COMEDY CENTRAL. I rest my case.

this wont ever happen. the only reson we have the "unconscious" desire to have sex is so we can reproduce. Having sex with a robot wont help that so no. the only reason we have the desire so much is because if we didnt we would probly not be here because we have such a low rate of reproducing.

the idea this stuff could be developed to the point the guy is talking about is no big surprise...but will it? I doubt it in this country due to the strong political clout of the religious right...if people are fighting other different kinds of people than them having the right to get married (gay marriage), then there is no way they are going to support the depersonalization of humanity, particularly the religious interpretations on what is proper sex and what sex should be for.
I found it interesting that someone mentioned the Stepford Wives cause you can read the metaphor for robots in that movie as traditional gender roles afforded to women. If women were relegated to the domestic sphere and "programmed" to be subservient and please their husbands (as they were in the film) while they get dehumanized in the process (this is what some where arguing was happening to Berry's wife, remember?) then it's arguable the issues we talk about regarding sex with robots (dehumanization, loss of meaningful personal relationships, human fulfillment) relate to real world ways we've treated each other in the past and to some extent continue to do so.

Oh yeah, check out this vid about robots too...it's a good one.

I thinks its so weird to think about a relationship with a robot. that's just kinda scary. Though I can see why people would want to be in one. You couldn't get STDs or a robot pregnant, but that just makes the idea even scarier. Before we know it , we'll be living in the world of the Bicentennial man.

First and foremost....CREEPY! Like hxc creepy! But more to the point...robots can never replace human involvement. No matter how much they are programmed to be human, they never will; they can never replace that warmth, that emotion that humans have. Robots only have programs, they can only mimic humans, never be human.

To have a robot lover takes away from human interaction, why would you need anybody real anymore. Having a "coin-operated boy" to use a Dresden Doll reference does not make up for having a real person by your side.

AHHH...this is just creepy! The only thing that comes to mind though, is Jude Law from the movie A.I....like love robot....weird..well not the Jude Law part, but the robot part.

I think the fact that people could actually fall in love with robots or have sex with robots is the craziest thing i have ever heard. I think it was a figure of speech as the world today is becoming so technological advanced. Technology today is more than it has ever been and it continues to grow. With the technology we have it is easy to say that we will fall in love with robots but the truth that this will actually happens is very slim.

falling in love with robots does seems extremely crazy. Even though it does seem pretty crazy it probably could happen. People do get real attached to their computers and who knows what will happen in the future if things keep up. The whole idea though is real creepy.

Unfortunately, I think that's what the world will eventually come to. It's already kind of starting in a subtle way. Women have been using vibrators for a while, so I think that the next step would be a full on robot. No matter what happens, it's going to be really weird. Scratch that, EXTREMELY wierd.

So obviously Colbert was being sarcastic, but not Levy. A weird thing to write a book about, he thinks this will be revolutionary. I'm not so sure. I would never feel comfortable with a robot around, even if they were just there to cook and clean. Stuff like that freaks me out. Afer seeing Artificial Intelligence and iRobot, I don't want to have anything to do with robots. People are afraid of animals, like pitt bulls, turning on them, well what about a robot. If it acquired the knowledge and was programmed to do so, it could be disastrous. I would never love a robot, or want one to "love" me. It's just too weird.

I have a hard time understanding how David Levy is actually serious about his book. Does he really think that humans would have feeling for a robot? If somebody spouse dies, you want comfort but I would rather have a friend to talk to or an animal in my house to hug rather than a robot rolling around. I think he just has a really creative imagination and has taken it too far. Technology is a good thing and can help people with relationships like emailing but for myself personally I could never have feelings for robot. I just have a really hard time taking Levy serious.

This is probably the creepiest thing I think I've ever heard. People not only thinking about using robots for technological purposes and advancement in medicine and the production of food but also for sex. How weird can people be that they're trying to create robots for sex? I mean people are already staying in enough on their computers and watching television enough that we don't need to develop robots that we can have sex with. Just the thought about that takes all the fun out of going out and trying to find a relationship because people wouldn't want that they would just want to hang out with their robot that they know would put out and that's a pretty ridiculous idea.

This all comes back to the ethics that we are talking about in class. This reminds me so much of stem cell research. If you created a robot to look and act like someone, would it be that person and if not who would it be? I think that life is lived by loss and people must deal with that. But i feel that this is not a good form of technology and that people should love only that one person they married. Its in the vows "till death due us part". But i also find it really creepy that they would think about something like this!

Well seeing as the writers' strike is still going on Colbert is trying to find the craziest people to come on his show. It's gonna be a long time before anything that is a robot looks even remotely human, so loving your robot would be no different than loving your dog. Having sex with robots is pretty ridiculous but I'm sure it will happen and whatever company develops them will probably be huge, since there are a lot of weird people out there. Next we would be getting into wondering if robots should be made citizens. All I know is there is going to be some freaky stuff happening in our lifetimes.

It would be cool to see robot Angelina Jolies no doubt. I doubt that Robot love would be viewed as a good thing by the public. Maybe in the future its possible to put memories/lifestyles into a robot so that the robot can perform like a dead person.

I wouldn't be surprised if people today are in love with robots, there are some freaky people out there! How do you do that with a robot? I couldn't even imagine it it is so weird. What if you had something happen to the robot when having sex and needed to go to the hospital? That would be an interesting story. The thing that creeps me out is that people will buy these. Yuck

I think that if people were to start dating robots it would be completely insane. Generally I am the type of person who will be really understanding about nearly anything in life. However, I'm not so sure that I would really be understanding about having a "robotic relationship". Honestly, what's the point? Other than wanting to be able to tell it what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. Can you say control freak? Plus, how would we be able to distinguish who was a robot and who wasn't? What if the robots were virtually unrecognizable? Personally, if I found out my boyfriend, fiancé, or husband was a robot, then I would be absolutely furious. We have enough people in the world causing pollution, destruction, and chaos. We definitely don't need robots roaming the city's, taking up more space, and causing more chaos. I believe if you aren't the type of person who wants to actually go out and look for someone worthwhile to spend the rest of your life with (can you say lazy?)then you shouldn't be able to have the option of starting a meaningless relationship with a non-living creature who will do what you want. It's pointless, in my opinion of course.

Well as Jewels said so well "I find this really... weird"X5 Would I do it hell no. Could i see other people doing it? I mean you'd be surprised what people fall in love with. I mean there are murderers who are obsessed with killing, Crazy Star wars geeks who dress up like characters and reenact scenes from the movies and they LOVE it. I mean I suppose there is someone for everyone...
