Paper 2

One of the things we're going to discuss in class today is your second paper. A number of you have already been working on ideas. I'd like you to post some ideas in your comment for today's blog. Try and come up with a few. Later, in class, I'll give you a little time to discuss your ideas with some classmates and then ask for you to write a short formal description so I can take a look.

I was thinking about analyzing one of several different things. Both are visual media. One thing I was considering writing about was the show Scrubs. I think that it can say a lot about growing up and about father figures in a man's life. I also was considering the movie The Godfather because I think it has a strict definition of what a man is and what a woman is. It is also a great movie and those underlying messages may contribute to that.

I was thinking about writing about masculinity portrayed in movies. I feel like I Am Legend is a good movie to write about, because I feel like Will Smith portrays a lot about masculinity. After hearing some ideas and talking about it in class, I'm sure I will come up with more ideas.

I have thought about doing a movie more so than any other type of media. I think the movie, "What women want" and "how to lose a guy in 10 days" are both possible choices but I am sure that I will come up with something better to do (hopefully).

For the second paper, I am thinking about analyzing one of the more classic Disney movies, focusing on the role of the "female" character in the films. Some of the movies, such as "Beauty and the Beast" depict women stepping outside of the typical roles set for women, or on the aspect of the "damsel in distress", for example, in the movie "Hercules".

I was thinking about showing the gender roles in the show "Home Improvement". I was also considering picking out a disney movi and discuss how women are treated in that movie. Its a simple example, but I think its a good example of gender stereotypes.I will definitely be coming up with more ideas once I think about it more.

I've thought about writing about femininity in the TV series "Sex and the City." I'm not sure exactly what I'd write about, but I'm pretty sure it would deal more with femininity than masculinity. If I can't think of something for that, I'd probably do a movie, but I'm not sure which one.

I have been thinking about writing about masculinity and how it is portrayed in Hollywood. I was thinking about using movies such as Rocky, The Patriot, and Fight Club. i think that all of these movies deal with masculinity and really look into different aspect of it.

To be honest I really have not begun to consider what to write about for this paper but off the top of my head... I think the movie Juno would be interesting to analyze. It provides insight to many different types of situations. The most obvious is of course dealing with teenage pregnancy but there are many others as well. It also brings up other situations such as how couples who cannot have children deal with it. There are many other smaller issues that make up this movie as well. From the moment I saw it I loved the movie. It was funny and entertaining but also very sentimental and uplifting.

I am thinking about writing my paper in the differences in male female stereotypes in terminator 1 and 2. In the first one, Sarah Connor is a victim and is can not look after herself. In the second one she is a badass. I will also make comparisons and contrasts with the male roles in the two. In the first the men are mostly emotionless and are protectors. In the second one he is more nuturing, almost motherly towards the end. He is not a godless killing machine

I am thinking about using how media portrays the typical male. Some of the movies I have in mind are terminator, agent 47, or maybe a Clint Eastwood Movie.

I can't decide if it's better to use a movie where the character is purely no emotion, or if it's on a character who we think has no emotion, but later shows us that he does(kind of like Rambo)

Last week I brainstormed what to write about for my second paper. I decided, after researching typical female stereotypes and what they communicate, that I want to analyze the construction of the female identity in the popular MTV "reality" show The Hills. I do like this show, but I feel it contains hard-core examples of what are genuinely considered by society to be female traits. I plan to describe in detail what each trait is and how it is shown; then, I will analyze what this communicates to the audience as far as what it means to be female.

I was considering writing about the Rocky trilogy. Rocky is heavily conflicted in a sport that characterizes masculinity. He has many problems which have to do with what kind of man he is.
The Simpsons have clearly defined roles. This cartoon has been popular for a long time and the roles could be a reason.

As I was brainstorming about ideas that i could analyze and write about some popular culture items i came up with were movies such as Saving Private Ryan, V for Vendetta, or the bourne series, these movies all show masculinity differently, and they all would be very excellent resources or models in pop culture.

I would like to focus on the movie "Chicago", and how it features two of the most dominant stereotypes of male characters in our society; John C. Reilly represents the weak, loyal man controlled by his wife. A good guy, but not one who is respected by his male peers. On the opposite end of the spectrum is the Richard Gere character, who is a slick, attractive womanizer. Female audiences love this character, but not what he stands for. I would like to focus on how these varying perspectives on the ideal male reflects our society's somewhat schizophrenic nature of what we want our men to be.

I thought about analyzing the "indie" movies, especially among the movies:
Garden State,
The Royal Tenanbaums,
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,
Little Miss Sunshine,
and Life Aquatic.
These All have very similar styles, themes, and all seem to aim at conveying messages about life. I also thought about analyzing the message in Strange Fiction. Or even just talking about the absurdity of entertainment purely for entertainmen. Genres include Thrillers, War movies, And anything else concentrated on heightening the audiences adrenaline.

I was thinking about analyzing the disney movie, Mulan. It shows the power of masculinity and femininity in society. I was also thinking about writing my paper on the tv show, Seventh Heaven. I am still brainstorming on my topic.

I was thinking about doing the tv show, Full House. The father in this show has to play both the mother and the father role. The mother died when the children were young, so the father has to raise three girls and have a job, dinner, and laundry.

I am thinking about analyzing a movie that a has a conflict of Male ID. But i am not quite sure what movie i want to view yet.

Definitely a movie that has to do with male identity as an issue. I really like movies and have no idea which one i want to do yet. SO many movies display the masculinity of mankind very well. I still have to choose which one still.
