Ruth's Song

I'm wondering if any of you can make any connections between the Rich piece we read for and discussed last time and Steinem's piece this time. How are the pieces related? Are there any essential differences? Please leave a response in the comment section.

Both of these pieces had somewhat of a feminist undertone to them. The Rich piece dealt with the domestication and submission of women. Steinmens had some similarities. She gave up her budding career to marry her husband and raise their kids. She eventually became stuck at home because of her mental illnesses which can somewhat relate to Rich's because that dealt alot with the women's domain, a house. It also marginalized her problems. She was not important enough to recieve treatment. Had she been a working woman she would have and she stopped so she seemed not important because she wasn't part of the work fore. There are some differences in the pieces as well. Rich had a much more overt tone and message. Steinems was not as out in the open.

Each piece dealt with the relationships of a woman and her family. Although the second reading was more of a narrative reflection while the first seemed to be written to provoke thought. I enjoyed the second reading more because it gave more insight to the author's feeling and thoughts unlike the other which was a composition of thoughts of others as well as the author's.

It was interesting how Steinem's Uncle's problems were attributed to external forces, but her mother's were the effects of herself. I immediately thought of Rich's text when I read this passage of Steinem's work because it seemed like an example of the hostility directed toward females that Rich talks about. In fact, the mother experienced many obstacles, which were created by men, in her efforts throughout her life to be independent and respected. These led to her "broken spirit" - what Rich would would call success in man's attempt to control woman. Essentially, Ruth's life is an example of the subjugation of women that Rich writes about. I would say that the difference between the two works is that Rich's writing was designed to motivate by spurring anger while Steinem's was designed to motivated by drawing sympathy for the broken spirit of women.

Both of these stories were interesting, but I liked reading Steinmen's piece a lot more.I understood it more, and it held my attention. Both of these pieces were very feminist, which I thought was interesting. While Rich'spiece dealt with the domestication of women, Steinmen'spiece delt more with a story about a hard working woman who came down with a mental illness. Steinmen's piece was different because the woman in the story gave up her job to marry her husband, had kids, and then had to give up everything because of this illness. She could not be left alone, and her kids always had to be there for her. Rich's piece was interesting because it explained a lot about womens roles and their domain. I thought both of these pieces were interesting, but I feel I could talk about Steinmen's story more.

Both peices dealt with feminist issues, but approached these topics in very different ways. The Rich peice dealt with these issues by examining historical customs, beliefs of world religions, anthropologists' perspectives, and she invokes long-held patriarchal beliefs in order to combat them. Steinem on the other hand uses a personal story to apply these general concepts more specifically, and we are thus able to see how Rich's abstract ideas play out in our society today. In sense, Steinem addresses these issues more directly, as she makes certain statements known about her attitude toward, for instance, the custom of the mother giving up her life in order to support her husband. Both peices are very persuasive, and convey just how ingrained patriarchy really is in our society.

Both of these pieces seem to deal with the issue of feminism and a woman's right to be treated equal with men. Ruth was a feminist herself, though she was forced to give up her career in order to provide for her family. Steinem's piece seemed was a narrative and sought to connect readers on an emotional level. She also seemed to rationalize the decisions of her father, rather than blaming him for his mother's condition. Instead of trying to explain what caused the patriarchal tendency, she merely pointed out the instances in where it effected her mother. I feel that Steinam was much less forceful in trying to point out differences in status between sexes. Although her article was about feminism in many ways she was not extremely overt and it seemed as if her focus was more on the change in her mother and what she learned from her.

There don't seem to be many extremely obvious similarities for the two pieces, but they both discuss the ideas of parenting and the importance of the mother's influence in a child's life.

In the Rich piece, it is suggested that children somewhat fear their mother and are obedient because of it. Steinem's piece suggested that Ruth could be scary at times and showed us how the author avoided certain situations involving her mother by giving her the elixir.

Rich's piece seems to discuss more about the paternal roles, while Steinman's mainly focuses on her mother and her experiences growing up in a single parent household for the majority of her life.

They were both similar in that they were written by feminists and advocating feminism. Steinem's story was much more a personal narrative with some important points than a research paper. The format that Rich uses is much more broad and tries to describe everyone not just a single situation. Steinem wrote about her life and it not only describes her struggles as a woman but also her struggles with internal problems. This is more of a story than a persuasive essay and makes it much more like entertainment. I think it is a good story but doesn't provide more encompassing evidence as Rich's writing did.

These readins were very similar in that they both looked at the role of women in society. However, each reading approached this issue very differently. Rich's article focused more on how the roles of women have evolved over time. It seemed like it was more of a summary of women and how they are viewed by society. I thought that Steinem's story was better because it was a narrative of a real life experience. Also, it showed how women reacted to the role that they are forced into. I thought that Ruth's story was very interesting because it showed a side to women and mother's that is often overlooked.

Rich's piece definitely dealt with the issues of feminism and domestication. Being forced to raise her children and abandon her dreams is an example of domestication. Steinmans essay had some similarities with Rich. Stein am also gave up her career to have a life at home raising her kids. Each writing had a lot to do with women and their relationships with their families. Steinmans reading had more insight to it then Richs, a lot more detail and had more ideas from the author.

Rich's piece was very generalized and spoke of all women and how their role in society came to be. Steinem's spoke of her own personal relationship with her mentally ill mother. They both dealt with issues relating to feminism. Each piece asked questions about what happened in the past. Rich about how gender roles came to be and Steinem about how her mother use to be. Each provided answers from other sources.

Both pieces obviously relate to feminism; however, both in different ways. I think in essence the history of why someone believes in the equality of women is based a lot of how they were raised. Both women found the woman in their life to show them a strong stand and to teach determination. I think both pieces dealt greatly with relationships and the idea of a family as a strong foundation for growth. I did like to see how even through Rich's struggle she realized the need for interdependence and unity.

Both the readings dealt with feminism and each women's take on it. Each piece also incorporated their family into writings too. I enjoyed reading Steinem better because it was more of a narrative and it was easier to follow. It was also more interesting because it was her view points and her story as opposed to the Rich reading where there was a bunch of other people's ideas and opinions in it.

Steinmens story was based more on her actual life instead of looking at the role of women in general which Rich did. They both showed feminist issues. It seemed that Rich wrote more to get a reaction from people. Steinmen put things in a way to get her point across but not necessarily to anger anyone. Rich made her writing more to get you thinking about feminist issues.

There is definitely somewhat of a connection between the two pieces. They both are dealing with the role of a female. I think that his week's piece is playing more of a emotional role, and telling a story to convey in its readers. The story last week was more philosophical with no personal stories in it. This week's piece was easier to connect with, and actual reflect upon. Whenever a writer adds their own story, it brings a something new, and good to the piece.

Both pieces were written by a feminist and dealt with equality. The second reading was much more interesting because it was more of a narrative. The second one wasn't as flat out with what it was trying to say, but it was easier to understand. They both talk about family relationships between a mother and child but approached it differently.

Both readings focused on women and their roles in family situations. They were set up differently the second reading was more of a story while the first one was in essay form.

Steinmens talked about her relationship with her daughter and her husband. She also talked a lot about her feelings and how she has switched personalities throughout the story. Rich talked a lot about feminist viewpoints and how women are looked down upon and only used for children.
