"Rape" in Cyberspace????!1

We've taken a bit of a break from these blog entries, huh? Let's get back to them this for (virtual) class tomorrow...

Dibbell focuses on the development of an online community in his piece. What do you think crystallizes that community? When does it become a community? Does it even become a community? What does Dibbell think?

People more often, though, focus on the term "rape" being applied in the online world. Where does the term originate from? Does Dibbell come up with it and endorse it? Or, is he quoting others? If so, who? Why might someone use this term to apply to what happened on LambdaMOO? How is it a workable or unworkable term?

Are cyber "crimes" real or just imagined? Should Mr. Bungles be culpable in some way for what he did? Do we have responsibilities online similar to those we have in real life or is it just a free for all?

Write a comment in which you respond to these questions or come up with some of your own....
