Could robots "terminate" mankind?

The technological advances in our society are hard to miss. Everyday something new comes up, and it is eventually admitted into our society. For instance, robots are becoming a growing trend in our lives. From robots that can vacuum to robots that are made to specifically perform various other tasks. There seems to be virtually no end to what are society can dream up or even create. Honestly, at this point there isn't a lot out there that does surprise me when it comes to our innovations.

Our various discussions has sparked my wild imagination into mountains of wonder. As a child, one of my favorite movies was The Terminator 2: Judgment Day which was the sequel to the movie the Terminator (there is also a third The Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, a new series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and it is rumored that there is a Terminator 4 Salvation: The Future Begins in the works). This series of movies is probably the best example I can give you for my blog post.

For those of you who don't know what The Terminator is about, you can read up on the plot. But basically the general overview of all of the movies revolves around machines and robots taking over the world and attacking the human race after we put too much of our dependence upon the robots. Only a handful of humans survive the vicious attacks, and their goal is to overturn the machines and prevent them from doing any good. Each movie is set in a different time period. For instance, the first movie is several years before the attack. The machines send a terminator into the past to kill Sarah Connor, who is going to be the mother of the future human leader John Connor. The humans send a human, Kyle Reese, to protect Sarah from the terminator. The Second movie is set in John Connor's teenage years (also before the actual attack). Once again the machines send a new and improved terminator to kill John. This time the humans send a terminator, but he is the older, less technologically advanced terminator. Sarah is in a mental institution (because of her stories about the machines and Kyle) but is helped to break out by her son and the "good" terminator. The third movie takes place during the time of the attack. One final attempt is made by the machines to kill John, but the mission is incomplete. However, the machines attack, and many humans die. The machines are in control of everything.

The general plot of these movies mixed with my imagination and our discussions on technology and robots makes me wonder what would happen to us if this ever happened. It seems that we are becoming somewhat dependent upon technology today. I mean, it is nearly impossible to do a lot of things in life without technology. Many companies store all of their important information on computers, banks have online banking, schools require papers to be typed, many people shop online rather than in a store, computers control weapons, internet bill pay, and the list could literally go on forever. Technology is everywhere, and it is nearly inevitable.

Before I give you some questions to think about, I would like you to view this first. Now, how likely do you think it would be for us to become so dependent upon our technology that it blows up in our faces and backfires? Do you think that it is possible for machines and/or robots to gain their own knowledge and experience from us and then use it against us? Do you think that our technology would advance enough to the stages of time travel and hardcore killing machines? What would you do if we were presented with a war against machines? Do you think we would win? Lose? And, what if YOU had a terminator out to kill you? Ponder these questions and so many more...

It's possible for us to create machines that learn. In a matter of years it'll be possible for us to make these things. If somehow everything backfires back at us, it'd be us destroying ourselves through these things. We would need to also create a fail safe that disables all these all machines if that were to ever happen, and shut them all down. We would set ourselves up to not be able to lose a war like this. Time travel isn't anything that any of us are ever going to see. Teleportation would happen before time travel, and that's still a long shot. We aren't going to be to find any worm holes to travel in.

I think that is possible for robots to learn, however i do not think that it is possible for something like terminator to happen. Maybe they could take control but why would they really need to. I'm sure that they would need us for something. I think that the fact that they don't rally have a purpose for life, as in a higher purpose, there would be no point for them to take over. Maybe they would be able to think for themselves but why would they feel the need to destroy human kind.

Anything can happen. Possibilities. The chances of that happening is very likely. But since we have movies and everything out about it. We might be more aware of it and possibly prevent it from happening in the first place. But then again we aren't exactly the brightest bunch under the sun.

I do think that its possible for machines/robots to learn more than they should. When is learning to much come into play? How can we judge how much they are able to learn? I think that unfortunately people in this world want technology for the wrong reasons, and this is were the dangerous machines might come into play. If one person in the world gets a hold of these kinds of robots, then everyone will want one. I don't know if something like the terminator will happen, but I definatly see machines/robots making a lot of noise in the future. Whether they will be of good or bad use is still the question.

I think it would be impossible for machines to take over. We created them so we can destroy them. Considering that we probably could never make anything with free will and its own thoughts I really think that its not going to happen. Mostly I think what we are destroying is ourselves with machines by being too dependent and not relying on ourselves enough.

In a way, I think that machines already do have control over our world. As dependent as the people are on technology today, I can not imagine what are lives would be like if we were to magane on our own. I also do not see us using technology any less in the future. Soon, everything will be run by machines and robots, which will in some ways hurt the humans. I am not sure if robots will ever be able to revolutionized enough to the point where they will be able to have a mind of their own and make personal human-like decisions.

I think terminator sounds to outrageous and to me because I even feel that way must mean we are not nearly close enough in technology today to even come close to whats needed for such a machine. What would I do if a terminator was sent after me? Easy, move to California so the governor could protect me! It's nice and pretty there.

I personally think that some day we will be so dependent on technology that it does blow up in our faces. I don't know how soon that will be but humans are always trying to push the limits of what technology can do. It's not enough to just design something to make life a little better but we have to make improvements on all our improvements. I do believe that one day we will create a machine that could possibly stand up and say we don't want to work for us anymore and just demand equality by force. I think it could happen because people always want to upgrade things so who knows what could happen.

If humans are ever dumb enough to create enough technology that is actually smart and powerful enough to learn from us, revolt, and take us over, then we all deserve to be destroyed anyway. This entire technological movement is in our hands. We are the ones who continue to create new technologies what seems like everyday. Hopefully, before we end up creating something powerful enough to one day take us over, we will be wise enough to realize that we are capable of getting by on our own without the help of some super-human machine that one day could decide to revolt and destroy us all.

Right now and in the very near future I do not think that it will be very likely that our dependency on technology will blow up in our faces and causes a threat to the human race, maybe in a hundred years years or so. Like in utopian/dystopian books of the past, it was predicted that by now we would have flying cars and that humans and technology would be completely out of control or overly controlled, and I feel like neither has occured. So maybe robots taking over will occur in a thousand years but I don't think that it will happen any time soon, and by that I mean in at least 50 years.

Even though it seems really cool I don't think that humans will ever figure out how to time travel. I feel this way for many reasons but I just don't think that it is likely.

If we were presented with a war against machines I'm not sure what I would do but I do think that humans would win. I just think that humans will always be the smartest beings on earth even against the things that we make. So I think that many lives will be lost but at the same time I know that there will be at least that one human who's lightbulb goes off in his/her head on what to do, and BAM!!! The war is won. YAY!!!
