Women Gamers

Here's an interesting article on CNN regarding info and statistics on women gamers...there are more than I would have guessed...Some companies are actively courting women game designers, so it looks like things are slowly changing.

I think that this article was interesting and the game The Agency sounds like a really great idea. I have friends who go to the Art Inst. in Pittsburgh and several are in game design, most I know are men but I do know a few girls who are involved and from what they tell me it is extremely competetive and hard to get noticed because of the lack of women in the classes. I think it is great they are offering that money and internship to women gamers because it will definitly open new doors for girl students who want to make an impression on the gaming world.

If you think about most of the war games and "killing" games are most likely designed by men (and probably designed more for men). There are still a lot of gamers out there however that still want the older role playing games that are more on plot and story then just pure killing. If i were a Nintendo exec. (just to throw a company out there) I would definitely hire some females to design games because I believe that they not only would come up with just as many good game ideas and concepts but also that they would be able to take video games back to the good stories that they used to be.

This article was very interesting to me and I like it how they came up with G.I.R.L. I think that it is a little funny hearing about people like Torrie Dorrell who plays video games maybe a little too often according to their significant other. Usually when I read something regarding this situation it is about a guy who spends more time with the game than the girl. In that thought, it does show just how male dominated video games are in playing and making.

I think that the scholarship idea is a great one and by only giving it to one woman will ensure it that they get a woman that is worth the money. I also like the idea of the game called The Agency where the main character will be a strong and apparently independent women who's appearance will be realistic and won't be as sexual as others. Disregarding the violent aspect of this game, I think that it will send a positive message to both boys and girls, but mostly girls.

I play with women all the time on xbox live and I get my ass kicked a lot too. I think they play harder and take it more serious because they are supposed to suck most guys think. So when they come out of the gate and kill you with a knife when you have a machine gun, you really wonder who the hell she is.

Many male-dominated industries today are currently encouraging female involvement in order to gain credibility. This day in age equal rights are taken very seriously so when an industry is almost all male, eyes are raised. Getting more females involved with gaming and game design will also benefit the industry by attracting more female customers and fans. Having women help to create these games will also have an effect on the final product and marketability of these items.

For the very short time in my life where I was engulfed in World Of Warcraft(RIP that person) I noticed that there were alot of female gamers. It really surprised me, I had thought for sure boys would always dominate the playing field. Even when I was engulfed in Halo2 (RIP lYlaximus) I was always shocked to see a fairly decent playing Halo 2 chick. Maybe it sounds sexist but in my experience I've yet to meet a girl who can beat me in Halo ha.

Well all i can say our girlfriends shouldnt be allowed to complain anymore lol. I believe there are a decent number of women gamers out there, but they play the laid back games the real money comes from the hard core gamers, who mostly consist of guys. thats why there are so many war games and violence oriented games out there on the market.

Attracting women to video games is a definite open market because it hasn't really been hit yet. Some games like the Sim's seemed geared more to women and it was a very successful game. I hope though if there are more women gamers than that doesn't mean there will be less games geared to men. I would not like to see a bunch of hair salon games and grand theft shoes (sorry if i offended anyone).

I think The Agency sounds pretty cool. I like the idea of women getting into the designing and making processes. I don't think this means changing games completely, but this will give games a new spin. This can be a good way to get more people involved and to make more money. I don't think that girls will necessarily make the games just appeal towards girls, but they can add new story-lines and not make the main focus killing.

I tihnk that woman game designers would create some very interesting games! It would offer a whole new feel to the gaming world, and possibly some very cool new ideas. I tihnk with these new designers it will be very interesting to see how the world of gaming changes in the next few years. I dont tihnk the gaming world is jsut for men.
